Deciding the Right Type of Flooring For Your Home in Suffolk County

When you are contemplating new flooring inside your home, you first have to decide what type of flooring would be the right choice. When selecting flooring, you want to consider more factors than just what is the nicest looking floor. You also need to consider what room or rooms will have the new flooring installed. Will you be installing separate floors in each room or one continuous floor throughout your home? Will the flooring be installed in the kitchen, bathroom, hallway, entryway or living room?

As cost and durability are most important, you also need to consider the moisture level in each room. Moisture level could help decide between solid hardwood, engineered hardwood or vinyl wood flooring. Rest assured, Cousins Hardwood Floors will explain the differences to be sure you select what wood flooring will stand the test of time for years to come.

Solid Hardwood Flooring

You see it all the time. Those home search shows on television when the potential homebuyer gasps at the beautiful sight of the hardwood floors spread out on an open floor plan. It’s not at all surprising since hardwood flooring is classic, elegant and timeless. And, as it should, hardwood flooring provides a great return on investment.

Solid hardwood is also considered a popular floor covering because the material is simply and naturally, pure wood from top to bottom. Hardwood types may include oak, maple, cherry, ash, walnut, hickory, bamboo and more. And it’s no wonder that other flooring materials are used to replicate the appearance of hardwood flooring. Hardwood floors add a warm yet elegant look to any room and match many decor styles, from modern to traditional.

One caveat to solid hardwood is that hardwood floors can be dented, scuffed and scratched. It is recommended that hardwood flooring be refinished approximately every 5 to 10 years. However, most homeowners agree that the beauty of solid hardwood is far worth refinishing every few years. For high-traffic areas, hardwood flooring owners may choose to cover the floor with area rugs or runners to cut down on maintenance.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Engineered hardwood flooring is actually real wood. As solid hardwood is a single piece of wood, engineered hardwood is constructed of multiple layers. The top layer is real hardwood that is backed by multiple layers of wood material. This allows movement, especially good for locations with higher humidity levels that would cause solid flooring to warp. The layers make for a stronger and more stable floor. And while engineered flooring does handle moisture better than solid hardwood, it is still made from wood so it’s not actually waterproof. Engineered hardwood flooring provides lots of color options and it’s priced less than solid hardwood.

Vinyl Wood Flooring

Vinyl wood flooring, available in sheets, planks or tiles, can be a more affordable option to hardwood and it does resemble hardwood flooring. And while hardwood flooring requires refinishing, vinyl flooring does not. In fact, vinyl flooring requires minimal maintenance. It is also moisture and fade resistant and durable so it will not be easily scratched as with hardwood flooring. Sweep and mop and your flooring looks new. Vinyl flooring is great for high traffic areas and even more importantly, homes with pets.

Some information about East Northport, NY

East Northport is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 20,217 at the 2010 census.

Soon after the establishment of a village in the Huntington area, English settlers sought to further expand their territory. On July 30, 1656, land was purchased from Chief Asharoken, head of the Matinecocks Native American tribe, part of which consisted of the land that is today known as East Northport.

Two distinct communities formed in the area now known as East Northport. The more populous settlement known as Larkfield was located on the northern side, near Vernon Valley (now part of Northport). Larkfield originally developed near the location of Genola Cemetery, just north of the modern-day junction of Larkfield Road, Vernon Valley Road, and Laurel Road. A second community located on the southern side was known as Clay Pitts, named for its vast deposits of red clay. This clay which had been used by Native Americans to form pottery was used by the Europeans to form bricks for construction. The land between Larkfield and Clay Pitts was well suited for agriculture, and the region prospered in the late 18th century as a thriving farming community by supplying produce to markets in New York City and Brooklyn.

In 1868 the Long Island Rail Road opened a station within the village of Northport. However, just a few years later the LIRR decided to move the Northport station to a new location in Larkfield to facilitate further railway extension to Port Jefferson. The new railway station located at Larkfield Road and Bellerose Avenue opened on January 13, 1873. Although the station retained the name of Northport, train conductors would refer to it as ‘East of Northport’, because the station was located east of the railway junction which used to direct trains north to the old station located in the village of Northport. Despite the fact that East Northport is primarily south of Northport, the area became known thereafter as East Northport. The Larkfield Post Office formally changed its name to East Northport in 1910. The East Northport, New York post office building was renamed the Jerome Anthony Ambro, Jr. Post Office Building in 1998.
